Emeralda Golf Club
Designed by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, this 27-hole club was fashioned on a grand scale. The clubhouse and three separate nines were clearly rendered with tournaments and big crowds in mind. Indeed, Emeralda has played host to several Indonesian Opens, the Johnnie Walker Super Tour, Dunhill Asian Masters and the Volvo Masters Asia.
The Palmer-designed 18 is nothing but gracious, however, a playable, expertly maintained layout that challenges the visiting player while never beating him up (provided he plays the appropriate tees). The long 6th on the River nine is a good example — a brawny, picturesque par-4 that turns right before venturing markedly uphill. Tough hole, but plenty of room out there and laid out on topography perfectly suited to captivating golf. The Plantation Course at Emeralda was actually meant to be the front nine of the 18-hole Jack Nicklaus design. Only nine were completed, but the Nicklaus nine remains a sterling loop.
Close to the city but a world away, the setting at Emeralda befits the Old World plantation that once occupied this property. The clubhouse was designed by internationally acclaimed Klages, Carter, Vail and Partners of California, in the tradition of Bandung’s celebrated Gedung Sate. Extending from the clubhouse out onto the golf course terrain are hundreds of colorful bougainvillaeas, white and violet lantana camaras and pink mosaendas.
• Emeralda boasts one of the country’s best on-course spa facilities, from treatment rooms in both the men’s and ladies’ locker rooms.
• Signature Hole: The 6th on the Lake Course is one Southeast Asia’s finest examples of the driveable par-4. A sprawling lake runs all along the right side, extending for big hitters the danger from tee to green, while asking pointed, strategic questions of those playing 6 as a two-shot hole.
